St. John’s United Church, Fall River, came into being when St. John’s United Church in Waverley, and St. John’s United Church in Windsor Junction, found their buildings to be inadequate for their ministries. The two congregations came together and built a new church building in Fall River, also named St. John’s United Church. Designed and constructed largely by congregation members, the new St. John’s United Church was dedicated on April 30, 1995. The 25th Anniversary of the church building was celebrated in the fall of 2020, complete with the creation of a time capsule to be opened on the church’s 50th!
The striking fish banner that covers the back wall of St. John’s sanctuary was added in 2017. Fabric artist, Donna Hogan, designed and constructed the banner, and church members contributed sea creatures of all shapes and sizes to fill the fishnet. Every sea creature represents a family or a person, alive in body or in spirit, who shapes our church. Each year we add to our fish banner and reflect on its meaning: Christ calls us to fish for people to be in right relationship, and to go out “into the deep” seeking love and justice for all.
Throughout the years, St. John’s has had a robust worship life with wonderful music in our warm, light-filled sanctuary, in which people see through clear windows to surrounding forests. St. John’s has nurtured community by providing space to Guiding and other community groups, by hosting family movie nights, potluck suppers, Christmas pageants, talent shows, study groups, Wise Café, Sunday School BBQ’s and UCW dinners.
In fact, in July 2023, the UCW held their 70th Annual Strawberry Festival! St. John’s United Church provides compassionate care through its Funeral Ministry, visits by its Minister and Pastoral Care Team, and its prayer shawl ministry.
The annual Tree of Lights brings hope and healing each Christmas season. St. John’s United Church has acted to care for the world by sponsoring refugees from Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Syria, by providing a weekly KD Lunch for local high school students, by making donations to Beacon House Food Bank and Phoenix Youth Services, by making meals for Metro Turning Point and St. George’s Kitchen.
Today our congregation supports the recently-founded Beacon House Shelter in Lower Sackville in a variety of ways. A gift of our church over the years has also been our children and youth programming. We have consistently provided dedicated leadership and have an active Sunday School and Youth Group.
In 2021, we held our first Walk Through Bethlehem, an interactive live nativity experience. Participants encountered costumed characters, petted live animals, visited the Baby Jesus in the stable, enjoyed beloved Christmas carols, and even walked a prayer labyrinth, if they chose. It is our hope that Walk Through Bethlehem will become a well-loved community tradition for many years to come.
St. John’s United Church, and her sister church, Wellington United, comprise the Waverley Pastoral Charge. The two congregations share office and ministry staff.
History is the story of what has been. It is also the foundation of what is to come. We look forward to a future that includes you!
